Booking choice: The most booked coach and cruise day, from $151 per person. Check dates Tour details
The question we hear most about Milford Sound is whether to cancel because the forecast says rain. Do not. The coach goes, the boats go, and a wet day is the one with the most water coming off the cliffs.
What does stop a trip is different for each kind of tour. Below: how much it rains, what actually cancels a coach, a cruise and a flight, what happens to your money, how the Milford Road closes, where to check, and how to use free cancellation.
The quick answer
Rain does not cancel a Milford Sound coach and cruise: the tours run in it, and the waterfalls are at their best. Flights are the weak spot: if the pilot cannot see the mountains, the plane and boat listing offers a new date or a full refund. The Milford Road closes for snow and avalanche risk, mostly between June and October, about 8 days a year, and a closed road stops coaches. Book early in your Queenstown stay, check the NZTA journey planner and the MetService forecast the evening before, and use the free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Does rain cancel a Milford Sound tour?
No. Coaches and cruises run in rain, and the operators say so in their listings: RealNZ tells guests to be prepared for rainfall because the landscape is especially dramatic when it rains.
Reviewers who went in a downpour say the same. Haruka from Japan, on the coach and cruise day: “It was raining in Milford Sound, but the waterfalls were incredibly powerful, and the view was spectacular.” Maggie from Australia, on the cruise and coach tour: “It rained heavily all day and the scenery was spectacular!”
What you lose in rain is the top of Mitre Peak, 1,692 m, which disappears into the cloud. What you gain is a fiord with water pouring off every wall. We would not cancel a coach day for rain. Wind and swell are the boat captain's call, not yours.

How much does it rain at Milford Sound?
About 6.5 metres a year on roughly 185 days, according to NIWA's 1991 to 2020 averages. January is the wettest month at about 667 mm; June is the driest at about 440 mm.
That makes Milford one of the wettest inhabited places in New Zealand, and rain on the day you go is more likely than not. In a downpour, hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear on the cliffs, on top of the permanent ones like Lady Bowen Falls, about 162 m high according to Wikipedia. Most of them fade soon after the rain stops, so a wet morning is worth more than a dry afternoon.
The month-by-month numbers, and what each season means for crowds and the road, are in the best time to visit Milford Sound.
What actually cancels a Milford Sound day?
For coaches, a closed road. For flights, low cloud and wind. For cruises, very rarely the sea. Rain on its own cancels none of them.
How each kind of weather hits each kind of tour, from the listings, NZTA and DOC:
| Weather | Coach and cruise | Fly-cruise-fly |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | Runs | Can fly if the cloud is high enough; the pilot decides |
| Low cloud on the mountains | Runs; you lose the peaks | Can ground the flight or turn it back |
| Strong wind | Runs; the captain decides the route | Can ground the flight |
| Snow, avalanche hazard | Road may close: no coach that day | Can fly if the sky is clear |
| Slips, flooding, rockfall | Road may close at short notice | Not affected by the road |

The weather-proof choice: a coach day that runs in rain, with lunch on the cruise and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates Tour detailsWhat happens if your Milford Sound flight is cancelled?
On the plane and boat trip, the listing says you can reschedule to another available trip or cancel for a full refund if bad weather or an operational problem stops the flight.
Small planes fly by sight over the Southern Alps, so cloud on the passes keeps them on the ground. Gayle from Australia, on the glacier-route flight: “Unfortunately first booking was cancelled, bad weather so book at the beginning of your stay.” GetYourGuide's review summary for that tour says some guests want clearer advance word on weather changes and timing.
Two half-outcomes happen too. Sue from Australia: “Was disappointing that we couldn't land in Milford Sands [sic] but the scenic flight was amazing also.” Sonya from Australia landed but skipped the boat: “We didn't do the cruise as the weather forecast wasn't ideal for the return journey.” The pilot's job is to get you back over the mountains, and the timetable bends around that. Both flights are compared in coach or fly to Milford Sound.

Check dates Tour detailsWhen does the Milford Road close?
Mostly in winter and spring, when NZTA closes it for avalanche risk or to set off avalanches with explosives. Snow, ice, slips, rockfall and crashes can close it in any season.
NZTA manages a 17 km avalanche zone from Falls Creek, above the Hollyford Road junction, to The Chasm, usually from June to October. Signs on the road show the hazard level: at low, the road is open; at moderate, it stays open but can close at short notice; at high, it is closed. You cannot stop inside the zone, even for a photo. A typical season brings 200 to 400 avalanches above and around the road.
Closures are often partial days. On 24 August 2026, for example, NZTA reopened SH94 in the morning after an overnight snow closure and scheduled it to close again at 4:30 p.m. until about 9 a.m. the next day. Over a year the road is shut about 8 days, mostly in winter. Vehicles may need to carry chains from June to November. For this winter, see the Milford Road in winter 2026.

Check datesWhat happens to a coach tour if the road is closed?
The tour cannot run, and the operator contacts you with a new date or a refund. If you hear nothing, contact the operator, or else GetYourGuide, directly.
NZTA can announce a closure the evening before or early in the morning, so check your email and phone before the pickup. That is the main reason to book Milford for the start of a Queenstown stay: a cancelled Tuesday can become a Thursday.
A road closure inside the 24-hour window is the operator's cancellation, not yours, so the new date or refund still applies. Drivers have it worse: a closed road means a 4-hour drive back to Queenstown, which is one reason we suggest a coach in winter. More on driving it yourself in driving Queenstown to Milford Sound.
How do you check the weather and the road before you go?
Check the NZTA journey planner for the Milford Road (SH94), the MetService national parks forecast for Fiordland, and your email from the operator, the evening before and again first thing.
- Road status: the NZTA journey planner, or phone 0800 44 44 49. NZTA also posts the avalanche hazard on screens in Te Anau and Queenstown.
- Weather: the MetService national parks forecasts cover Fiordland separately from Queenstown, and that difference matters.
- Your tour: the operator's email or text. A flight decision often comes on the morning itself.
- On the road: there is no mobile coverage past Te Anau, so check before you leave town.
Ignore the weather in Queenstown. It sits in a rain shadow, and a clear morning on Lake Wakatipu can be a wet one at Milford, and the reverse.

Check datesHow does free cancellation work when the weather turns?
Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before the start. Use that window for flights: if the forecast is poor two days out, move the flight while it costs nothing.
Inside the last 24 hours, the operator's weather call decides. If they cancel, you get a new date or your money back; if they run and you do not show, you pay. That is why the timing matters more than the forecast for coaches: book early, keep the booking, and let the operator call it.
One trick for flights: book a coach day too, a couple of days later. If the flight goes, cancel the coach more than 24 hours out. If the flight is grounded, you still reach Milford. GetYourGuide's reserve now and pay later option makes this cheaper to hold. Every price is in Milford Sound tour prices.
Is Milford Sound worth it in bad weather?
Yes, in rain. Reviewers who went in a downpour still call it spectacular. Low cloud is the real loss: you see the walls and waterfalls, not Mitre Peak's summit.
The reviews keep coming back to the same point. Simon from the UK, on the premium coach: “no matter the conditions it is worth the trip.” Alicia from Australia: “Very BIG day but totally worth it.” On a flight day the maths changes, because the flight is what you paid for and cloud takes the view. If the weather turns while you are in Queenstown, switching from a flight to a coach keeps the fiord in your trip.
